The award we really wanted…

The iconic, multi-award wining Wing building we designed for the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust has picked up two more prestigious awards – and this time we really are celebrating.

Although the wing-shaped visitor centre at Capel-le-Ferne has already collected a handful of top prizes, the Kent Design and Development Awards have always been special to us as an architectural consultancy, even more so as they are independent of any magazine or trade group.

The awards are bi-annual, which means the panel of expert judges was looking at great building design across the county in both 2015 and 2016 – and we were delighted when The Wing came top in the the Commercial, Industrial and Retail category.

Attending the Kent County Council-backed awards with some of the Trustees from this very special clifftop memorial at Capel, we were quick to celebrate our joint success – but the evening was to get better.

After the winners of the nine categories were announced, the ultimate award for Project of the Year was voted on by the audience of experts – and went to The Wing. That was particularly pleasing, as the voting audience consisted of representatives of architectural practices, civil and structural engineers and similar businesses that were there because one or more of their projects had been nominated for an award.

β€œThe vote represented no less than the Kent peer group expressing their opinion and telling us that The Wing was the best building of the lot,” said Trustee Andy Simpson.

The Kent Design and Development Award judges, all specialists in their fields, were drawn from architectural, conservation and design, housing and regeneration backgrounds, as well as civil and structural engineering, and visited all the short-listed projects.

The partners here at Godden Allen Lawn share the understandable pride shown by the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust in this iconic building and we are delighted to have had the privilege of being part of the team that created it. We are very proud of all the awards it has received, but especially this one.

The Trust does an amazing job of paying tribute to the veterans of the Battle of Britain at Capel-le-Ferne. Please visit The Wing soon and see it for yourself.
