The award we really wanted…

The iconic, multi-award wining Wing building we designed for the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust has picked up two more prestigious awards – and this time we really are celebrating. Although the wing-shaped visitor centre at Capel-le-Ferne has already collected a handful of top prizes, the Kent Design and Development Awards have always been special to us as an architectural consultancy, even more so as they are independent of any magazine or trade group. The awards are bi-annual, which means […]

Preserving our history

While the Godden Allen Lawn Team has a great reputation for designing modern buildings like the Spitfire-inspired Wing at Capel-le-Ferne, we also know our stuff when it comes to looking after the local heritage. As chartered surveyors, we are skilled at maintaining the fabric of old buildings, and our portfolio currently includes two of the oldest in the country. We protect, preserve and advise the Trustees who are responsible for two Kent alsmhouses, St John’s Hospital in Northgate, Canterbury, which […]

Town hall conversion uncovers a surprise

Our ambitious project to convert Folkestone Town Hall into a new museum for the town has exposed an old police cell that will now be incorporated into the final scheme. Folkestone Town Council asked Godden Allen Lawn to design and oversee the conversion of the lower ground floor and part of the upper ground floor after the authority was given £1.7m of lottery funding to carry out the museum scheme. “The lower ground floor used to house the town’s police […]

Raising the roof in Trinity Crescent

We’ve raised the roof with our innovative conversion of a former Folkestone hotel into luxury flats – literally. Our design for the St Olave’s building in Trinity Crescent, now being marketed by London-based Peak Living, involved taking off the roof and adding in two extra storeys to create a luxury penthouse flat with a stunning roof terrace. The scheme has created a total of 11 high-end one, two and three-bedroom apartments, with our novel approach to the top of the […]

RICS Award is the most impressive so far

The new Wing Building designed by Godden Allen Lawn for the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust is rapidly running out of wall space after picking up yet another award. The building at Capel-le-Ferne, just outside Folkestone, has now added a win in the tourism and leisure category of the prestigious RICS South East Awards 2016 to the successes it has already achieved. The award nomination said the building had added an exciting new dimension to the National Memorial to the […]

Another award for The Wing

The building we designed as a tribute to the heroes of the Battle of Britain has now collected its third – and perhaps most impressive – award . The Wing at Capel-le-Ferne, opened in March by Her Majesty the Queen accompanied by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, has now been named as one of the most excellent buildings in the country. The visitor and education centre, designed in the shape of a Spitfire wing, was Highly Commended in the Small […]

Village hall has transformed Kent village

Community life in an east Kent village has been transformed following the opening of an impressive extension to Barham Village Hall. Designed by Godden Allen Lawn, the new Barham Village Hall has provided a permanent home for a shop and post office that had been operating from a storage container in the car park, as well as more space and better facilities. Doubling the size of the village hall on a very tight site involved some innovative design work since […]
