Working with the community

Godden Allen Lawn worked with the parish council to invite local people to check out our plans for the new Preston Community Centre – and received an impressive response. Several hundred people attended the informal meeting in the village hall, where they could look at what is proposed for their new centre, and all the feedback was positive. Our scheme includes a main and small hall together with a reception/cafe area, and has been designed with flexibility in mind. “It’s […]

Banking on redevelopment

Godden Allen Lawn is delighted to have been asked to produce plans for the conversion of an important building in the centre of Hythe. The team has been asked to design a scheme that will turn the current Lloyds Bank – a Grade II Listed building – into a shop with living accommodation above.

Successful trial inspires more of the same

A few months back Godden Allen Lawn was asked to carry out a trial condition survey on a building at the historic Duke of York’s Royal Military School in Dover as a possible ‘best practice’ approach to the site as a whole. After evaluating the results of that trial survey, the school has asked us to use the approach as a template for other buildings on the site so that the owners can use the survey results to create a […]

Helping to provide new homes

The practice is delighted to have been asked to support Inspired Acquisitions in planning a stunning new development of 12 flats on the old bus station site in St. Stephen’s Road, Canterbury. We have been appointed to work up the designs for the site – currently a disused piece of land – to produce the drawings needed for building regulation approval. “This is an exciting scheme for Canterbury and we are pleased to be working closely with Inspired Acquisitions to […]

Fixing a hole where the rain gets in

Gooden Allen Lawn is continuing to care for some of the historic buildings  at the Duke of York’s Royal Military School in Dover, where we are continuing to be responsible for the repair work to two blocks of four staff houses. We have now been asked to tackle problems with water ingress in some of the other buildings on the historic site, many of which are listed, and after surveying the properties we are now carrying out remedial works to […]

Because everyone loves a party

It may not be glamorous, but protecting the interests of neighbours is a vital part of the work that surveyors at Godden Allen Lawn do for domestic, commercial and other clients across Kent. In recent weeks we have been working with Ashford Borough Council, acting as party wall surveyors to make sure refurbishment work the council is carrying out to homes in some of the villages around the area goes ahead smoothly. The council is upgrading a number of its […]

Royal opening for our museum scheme

His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent was suitably impressed with the transformation of Folkestone Town Hall when he declared the new museum officially open this week (Thursday (9 Nov). We were proud to have played our part in creating the new museum and equally honoured to be presented to The Duke when he arrived for a tour of the impressive facility. Godden Allen Lawn drew up the plans for the extensive scheme, which included major structural alterations, waterproofing the […]

Caring for some of Canterbury’s oldest buildings

Our expertise in looking after historic buildings has been recognised by the award of another new commission, this time from the Trustees of Eastbridge Hospital. The hospital comprises a collection of buildings in the centre of Canterbury, some of which date back to 1190. We have been appointed to look after the care and maintenance of a number of the properties around the city that are owned by Eastbridge Hospital, although not the hospital itself. While not listed, the eight properties, […]

More support for historic school buildings

Our links with the historic Duke of York’s Royal Military School in Dover have continued to strengthen following our work to repair two blocks of four staff houses. As well as overseeing the re-roofing of the houses, the project involved upgrading the insulation, repairing lead flashing to the chimneys and replacing the guttering and downpipes at the 1930s-built homes. The work itself was carried out by main contractors Sprinks Construction. Now the school has asked us to track down and […]

Roof terrace included in bold conversion

The first luxury flats created from a former hotel are now being sold following a £1m building refurbishment designed and overseen by Godden Allen Lawn. A London developer asked the firm to oversee the second phase of work at St Olaves, a derelict hotel and extension at numbers 11 to 13, Trinity Crescent in Folkestone. We redesigned the scheme to add a roof terrace, dealt with planning and building control regulations and then oversaw the building work, which included creating […]
