Another award for The Wing

The award-winning Wing building we designed for the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust at Capel-le-Ferne is in the running for yet another top prize.

The Wing at Capel-le-Ferne, which houses The Scramble Experience as well as a shop, café and learning centre, has made it onto the shortlist of the 2016 Kent Design and Development Awards in three separate categories.

The Spitfire wing-shaped visitor centre, which boasts solar panels and a host of other environmentally friendly features, has been shortlisted in the Commercial, Industrial and Retail, Public Buildings – Community and Environmental Performance categories.

“It’s no secret that winning a Kent Design and Development Award has been top of my wishlist for The Wing,” said partner Nick Lawn, the man behind this unique building. “The Wing has already won several awards, all of which have made us very proud, but this is the competition we are most keen on doing well in.”

Richard Hunting CBE, chairman of the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust which commissioned the building, commented: “The Scramble Experience, which brings to life the heroism and sacrifice of the men who fought in the Battle of Britain, has added something special to a site which welcomes tens of thousands of visitors every year, and it is pleasing to see The Wing’s contribution to the landscape also recognised.”

The Wing sits at the back of the clifftop home of the Battle of Britain Memorial and was designed to complement the setting of the National Memorial to the Few as well as reflecting the site’s location in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

The building, opened by Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, just 18 months ago, won the tourism and leisure category in the prestigious RICS South East Awards 2016 as well as being highly commended in the Small Commercial Building category of the 2015 LABC Building Excellence Awards and being named Best Small Commercial Building at the Southern Region awards.

The Wing also picked up two awards at the 2015 Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) South East Awards for Planning Excellence. As well as being judged the overall winner, the building won the Excellence in Planning and Design for the Public Realm category.
